WHAT IS NEO-TANTRA ?

Tantra is a diverse and ancient spiritual tradition that originated in India. It encompasses a wide range of beliefs, practices, and rituals, both spiritual and physical. The term "Tantra" is derived from the Sanskrit language, meaning "weave" or "loom," suggesting a weaving together of various elements, including philosophy, rituals, and practices.

In the context of massage, Tantra is often associated with a form of spiritual massage that aims to promote a heightened sense of awareness, connection, and intimacy between individuals. It's important to note that this particular aspect of Tantra is just one facet of a broader spiritual tradition, and interpretations and practices can vary widely.

The origins of Tantra can be traced back to ancient India, with its roots embedded in various Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The development of Tantra is complex and spans over many centuries. Scholars suggest that elements of Tantric practices began to emerge around the 5th century CE and continued to evolve over subsequent centuries.

Tantra is not a single, uniform tradition but rather a diverse and multifaceted set of teachings and practices that span different philosophical and religious systems. It has been influenced by various texts, including Tantras (scriptures), Agamas, and Puranas in Hinduism, as well as Buddhist texts.

It's important to note that Tantra is not limited to India; its influence has extended to Tibetan Buddhism, various Hindu sects, and other spiritual traditions. Tantra's widespread influence has also reached Western cultures, where it is often associated with practices such as meditation, yoga, and certain forms of sacred sexuality

Various terms are associated with the broad spectrum of practices and traditions related to Tantra. Some of these terms include:

  1. Tantricism: Refers to the study or practice of Tantra.
  2. Tantric Yoga: The aspect of Tantra that incorporates yogic practices for spiritual development.
  3. Kaula: A term used to describe a particular form of Tantra, often associated with ritualistic practices.
  4. Shakta: Pertains to Tantra that worships the divine feminine energy, often associated with the goddess Shakti.
  5. Vajrayana: In Buddhism, Vajrayana is sometimes considered a form of Tantric Buddhism, emphasizing rapid spiritual transformation.
  6. Agama: In Hinduism, the Agamas are considered authoritative scriptures that contain Tantric teachings.
  7. Mantra Shastra: The study or science of mantras, which are sacred sounds or words often used in Tantric rituals.
  8. Yantra: Sacred geometric symbols used in Tantric rituals to represent and invoke divine energies.
  9. Nigama: Another term used in Hinduism to refer to Tantric scriptures and teachings.

It's important to note that these terms may be used in different cultural and religious contexts, and the interpretation of Tantra can vary widely across different traditions and lineages.
